When Hubert Coles opened the first store in 1947 (then known as Coles of La Jolla Complete Home Furnishings) it quickly became known as one of San Diego’s finest furniture and flooring destinations. For the first several years, Coles provided bridal services in silver, fine chine, wall hangings, etc., along with furniture and other home accessories.
By 1965 Coles of La Jolla became Coles Carpets, specializing in floor coverings and draperies and grew from a 10,000-square foot location to its current 40,000-square foot superstore on West Morena Blvd.
Over the years, the company has gone through many other changes and growth spurts. Hubert’s two sons, George and Steve joined the company. We opened several new locations throughout the county, including on the military bases at MCAS Miramar and NEX 32nd Street. George Coles stepped up as President of the company and served for over forty years before passing the torch to younger brother (current President) Steve. Coles Carpets eventually became Coles Fine Flooring, clarifying our long-term commitment to all areas of flooring including Hardwood, Laminate, Tile and Stone, Vinyl and Area Rugs.
In 1992, Coles launched what is regarded as one of the boldest moves in the floor covering industry. Our “ONE YEAR SATISFACTION GUARANTEE”, to reflect our commitment to impeccable customer service. Fifteen years later, it still stands as the strongest retailer guarantee in the industry.
In 2006, founder Hubert Coles passed away, leaving behind a legacy of flooring excellence to his sons George (then President) and Steve (then Vice President), and his daughters Chris Coles and Janie Kuczwara who were working within the company at the time as well. Since then, Steve Coles’ daughter Lauren has stepped up, becoming the face and future of Coles and currently works in Sales at the San Diego location.
Throughout all the growth and changes over the last seventy years though, Coles has maintained only the highest standards of ethics and the same commitment to impeccable customer service that Hubert Coles himself instilled in his family and his company seven decades ago. The Coles family dedicates their success to their ethics and support for other causes. Coles and its team of leaders is dedicated to the San Diego community through ongoing support of groups such as the San Diego Humane Society, Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse and the Better Business Bureau.
Since the first customers passed through the doors at the original Coles seventy years ago, the Coles family has had a single mission: To provide customers with the best in service, superior products and a selection unmatched in the area. Over the decades, everyone, from store managers to installers and customer service representatives, have worked together to ensure complete client satisfaction.
Coles is proud to be celebrating 70 Years of service to the San Diego community this year and are excited for a bright future ahead.
