2022 Carpet Texture and Style Trends

With all the hard surface flooring options on the market, is carpet still trendy? Regardless of the latest trends and advances in hard surface flooring, carpet remains one of the more popular flooring options out there.

To keep carpet just as functional and beautiful as ever, carpet manufacturers are using technology to their advantage creating new styles and patterns, upgrading old favorites, and offering bold styles that fit right in in 2022.

Frieze
Frieze is quickly becoming what shag was to the 70’s and Berber was to the 90’s. It’s trendy! Frieze is a longer cut loop pile, that comes off as a bit more casual, less uniform look than other cut loop piles like Saxony. The carpet is dense and soft, but works well in high-traffic areas because footprints and vacuum tracks don’t disrupt piles all facing in one direction.

Frieze, also referred to as twist, is a very popular style of carpet in 2022. Due to its knobby appearance, it essentially the modern version of the old shag carpet from the 60’s and 70’s. It has a unique but clean appearance and is often multi-colored but comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

The high twist style of the carpet gives it an edge in durability because it is less likely to fray overtime. Frieze carpets are also great for high traffic areas. The way the twisted fibers flop in a lazily every which way helps them to conceal dirt, stains and footprints. This offers a long life little maintenance requirements.

One drawback to frieze carpet styles is that they can be difficult to clean. With tighter, shorter piles, spills are more likely to to sit on top of the carpet, making it fairly easy to clean up. Since frieze fibers are long and loose, spills are free to run everywhere, making it much more difficult to tackle. Professional cleaning is more of a priority for longevity of

The durability—along with the soft comfort, and great insulation qualities—have prevented frieze from declining in popularity over the last few years. In fact, demand is projected to stay stead in coming years as well!

Berber
Berber carpet is a level loop pile made of thicker yarn that’s typically a neutral shade with flecks of color in it. It’s durable and great in high-traffic areas, and hides dirt well among the variations in color.

Berber carpet originally came from North Africa. It was made from wool and had little flecks in it that were actually dirt. When manufacturers started to recreate the weave, they included the traditional flecks, this time made from an assortment of contrasting colored carpet fibers.

While still produced, the Berber carpet that was such a hot item in the 1990s is definitely outdated. However, Berber has become a synonym for any looped-weave carpet. And modern Berber styles are anything but dated. Modern Berbers are offered in a variety of colors and patterns using texture, twist, plush, and looped weaves to create pieces of art from millennium-old inspirations.

Berber or looped-weave carpets are very durable. They can be used in high-traffic areas of the home, as well as commercial spaces. They are perfect for transitional and modern homes, however, they do take a bit more care to clean. Over-saturating can create stains and harsh chemicals can burn the fibers. The best way to maintain the beauty of your Berber is to vacuum it frequently and have it professionally cleaned once or twice a year.

Patterns
Among both cut and loop piles, additional carpet textures can be created by combining piles of different heights or even combining cut and intact loops. Manufacturers create dramatic visuals with varying pile heights cutting geometric patterns into the carpet. You can find patterns available in a wide variety of styles and textures, although there are a few things to keep in mind when considering patterned carpet. A good rule of thumb is that generally bigger patterns work best in large rooms and smaller patterns work best in small rooms. This is because large patterns can be overwhelming in small rooms and small patterns can be easily lost in larger rooms.
